This post was originally going to be about "Heat Acclimation". But I was told that was lame.
"Rats in the attic. Elephants on the roof."
This is a metaphor I've been using with my clients for years. I just mentioned it to my husband this last week and he loved it. He loves communicating and finding creative ways to do so, so I'm sure this will come up sometime in our MS ministry at our church.
I get a lot of questions from clients like:
"What time of day is the best time of day to work out?" or
"Should I be doing my cardio before or after my strength training?" or
"Which kind of vegetables keep their nutrients the best, frozen, canned, or fresh?"
While these are all good questions and do indeed have answers, that is not the purpose of today's post. These are all examples of rats in the attic. A lot of clients major on these questions.
The questions I emphasize are the elephants on the roof:
"How many days/week are you getting your heart rate up? And how long are these exercise sessions?"
"Are you getting in 3-5 days of cardio and 2-3 days of strength training? Are you strength training all major muscle groups?"
"How many servings of fruits and vegetables are you getting per day?" (I do food diaries with my clients and this always SHOCKS them. A majority of them get 0-1 serving of veggies/day!!
So don't worry about the rats in the attic (small, sometimes unimportant aspects of fitness) if you are neglecting to get the elephants off your roof!! AFTER you remove the elephants, only then can you attack the rats!
Have a great day guys and don't forget to get your body acclimated to the heat before you hit it hard in the 80+ degree weather!!
