It's fall! Tis' the season for road races. Specifically marathons. Marathons are one of those races that lots of people aspire to achieve and few actually do and finish. It's a gutsy run. 26.2 miles.
Yesterday I got to watch the ING New York City Marathon on TV. I didn't really get into watching marathons (they are pretty long) until Lance Armstrong ran his first (the NYC) and did a web cam as he ran. It was pretty cool to see his thoughts along the way.
I honestly think a marathon feels a little bit like childbirth. Especially mile 24.
The winner was Paula Radcliffe, a woman who had won the race for the third time. She was recovering from an injury due to training too hard too soon after child birth (let that be a lesson to all us ladies!). She ran in the olympics and many other major events. She's a pretty well known woman in the running world.
But the woman I was really impressed with was the second place finisher. Ludmila Petrova from Russia was impressive. She hung with Paula through the whole race. Even as Paula had her negative splits and hovered around the 5:18 - 5:12 mile pace. (Holy cow). She fell back during mile 22, but still held on for 2nd place. Here's why I'm so impressed with her. She's 40. And has only won one major marathon, EIGHT YEARS AGO!! So here she is. Hasn't done anything major since she was 32 and comes on the scene to get 2nd place. Totally impressive in my book. Oh yeah. And she set a masters (40+ age group) world record at 2:25. That's about 2 hours faster than my marathon time.
I think the average age of my clients right now is about 40-45 +. Most of the time they come to me frustrated. Things don't "feel" right anymore. Their metabolism is not the same. They can't eat the way they did when they were 20. All very true. But let's get some encouragement from Petrova! We may not go out and win the next Boston, but we can all improve ourselves. Whether we're 20 or 90.
Have a great week! And STL, get out and enjoy this amazing weather. It was 80 degrees today! In NOVEMBER!!!
