This is a machine that I love and hate.
I hate it because I don't have an ipod and i run for at least 30-45 minutes staring straight ahead or trying to read the captions on the tv. I hate it because one of my very favorite things about running is being outdoors breathing deep of the fresh air. I hate it because people fall off of them, overextend their stride, and are injured on them every year.
But I love it because you always know exactly how fast you are going. You can challenge yourself with an incline or faster speed. I always seem to push myself just a tad faster if I know exactly how fast that is. I like it because when I have a crazy day I can take the kids to the child care at the Y and still get in a good run. I like it because they are probably the most non-intimidating piece of equipment a gym can own. And people will use them. I love them when it is ABSOLUTELY way too cold to run outside. And I LOVE tobada (an insane treadmill workout used regularly by the best trainer I know...Daryl Doran).
Treadmills...gotta love 'em...gotta hate 'em.
That's what I did my workout on today.

I know it's weird, but I get competitive on the treadmill. I try to go faster or last longer than the person next to me (without being obvious, of course). Somedays I get lucky and the person next to me is say, 70 years old. Other days I am stuck next to a super athlete and I end up sucking air and killing myself trying to "beat" them. I know it's silly, but like you said, when you are on there for a good chunk of time you need something to make it more exciting!
HA! That's awesome. I'll try that next time...
