Until I became a personal trainer I never really understood the importance of strength training. To be honest, until I became a personal trainer, I never even owned a gym membership. I truly thought I could get all the fitness I needed in my outdoor runs.
Whether performed inside or outside the gym strength training has many benefits.
Here's why we should all add 2-3 days of strength training to our regular weekly workouts:
1. The increase in lean mass can improve one's metabolism by up to 15%!!!
2. You burn more calories during your regular cardio workout and even while at rest!
3. You have more energy to perform other activities that will improve balance, coordination, and flexibility.
4. Lifting weights at least twice a week can relieve health conditions like arthritis, heart problems, depression, and diabetes.
5. Strength training reduces falls among older people, improves mood, and induces better sleep.
One more piece of advice regarding strength training: You don't have to spend 45 extra minutes 2-3 times a week. If you choose 8-10 exercises working all major muscle groups, you can cut your strength routine down to about 20 min.
